Last Thursday our students of the Escola d’Art i Superior de Disseny d’Alcoi visited the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), formerly known as OAMI, which offers different services related to trademark registration, drawings and models.
With this visit students have learned the importance of intellectual property and the processes that must be followed to protect their designs, a very important matter.
The basic reason for legal protection is to ensure that the innovator monetize the investment needed to obtain the innovation, protecting it from third-party usurpations. Industrial design adds value to a particular product, added value that sets the difference with possible competition and ensures survival in the market; it constitutes a fundamental strategic instrument in the company. For this reason, its creator, the student, has to obtain the exclusive right over it, in order to prevent the reproduction of third parties and this way being a source of income in the future.
